50th Anniversary History

Some Historical Details

Here are some key dates from our archives: –

4 May 1956 – Six Scouts (Patrick O’Farrell, David Thomas, John Keery, George Ball, Rodney O’Hara and Brian Meyer) attend first Troop meeting led by Rev Desmond Murray.

Mar 1957 Bought our first boat “Barbara” – a 22’ ex-Irish Lights Cutter with Dipping Lugsail and 4 oars for £50 (then the only Troop with a sailing boat!).

Jun 1957 First Camp on Whit Weekend with 17th Dublin (Blackrock) at their Powerscourt site.

Aug 1957 Four Scouts attend 9th World (50th Jubilee) Jamboree at Sutton Park, Birmingham.

Aug 1957 First two week Summer Camp at Dromineer on Lough Derg.

3 Jan 1958 Cub Pack formed, led by members of Dun Laoghaire District Team?

41st Dublin was the first Sea Scout Group to open a Cub Pack.

May 1958 First Whit Camp at “our own” Powerscourt site on river bend opposite Lacey’s Bank.

Spring 1959 Second mast with dipping lugsail, & false keel added to “Barbara” to improve performance.

Jun 1960 Dramatic growth of Troop: May’56 -6; May’57 -21; May’58 -30;May’59 -33; Jun’60 -38.

Aug 1960 First won Wood Latimer Cup (senior Skiff Race) at Sea Scout Regatta.

Sept 1960 First won Sir William Frye Cup Competition, and again in Sept 1961 and Sept 1962.
