Group Camp May 2012

Last year, the entire group camped together in Lough Dan, Co. Wicklow.  It was the first time in many years that all group sections camped together. It worked out so well that we have decided to repeat the event for 2012.

The Camp starts on Friday May 4th and ends on Monday 7th May. In like manner to last year, the duration of the camp will vary with age.

  • Beavers will camp on Saturday night only.
  • Younger cubs will camp on Friday and Saturday night only. Older cubs will camp for 3 nights. Kathleen can advise whether your cub will camp for 2 or 3 nights.
  • Scouts, Ventures and Rovers will also camp for 3 nights.

We are currently putting a programme together but aim to have a fun camp and get on the water as often as possible.  Other planned activities are orienteering, games and hikes. We plan to have a Hawaiian Fancy Dress party and bonfire on Saturday night, so make sure to pack some dress clothes.

The camp fee is €50 per scout and includes camping charges and food costs. We will need parents support for lifts to and from the camp.

If you wish to camp, then by FRIDAY 20th APRIL, you must reply to your Section Leader with a completed Permission toCampForm and fee. You must submit (if you haven’t done so this year already) an up to date Medical Consent Form.

Information on the Campsite can be found at http://www.loughdan.com/ and any other questions should be directed towards your section leader.

Meet to depart for Camp on Friday May 4th at 5pm at St. Patrick’s.

Collection to return home at 1pm on Sunday or Monday at Lough Dan.

Yours in Scouting,

Marie, Kathleen, Donnchadh, Simon & Stephen

What to Pack

  1.        Uniform & Scarf.
  2.       Sufficient clothes for 3 days – Extra socks are especially important. Remember it can get chilly in the evenings so make sure to have plenty of warm clothes.
  3.       Sleeping bag, ground roll and bivouac bag (bivvy) – wrap the first two in your bivvy  to keep them dry. No airbeds please – they take too much space. N.B. The ground roll isn’t a comfort luxury – it insulates from the cold ground at night and is essential. The bivvy bag acts as a barrier from dew that can form underneath at night while sleeping.
  4.    Waterproof footwear is essential – Wellies essential this trip. Hiking boots or wellingtons are    preferred as they keep both feet and clothes dry in mud and wet grass. Runners alone aren’t adequate if it’s wet.
  5.       Waterproof coat, leggings
  6.       Towel & toiletries.
  7.       Torch (with fresh batteries)
  8.       Bowl, Plate & Mug (Enamel or Plastic)
  9.       Knife, Fork & Spoon.
  10.       Water bottle.
  11.       Two tea towels per scout. Old ones preferably- probably a one way trip.
  12.       Suncream ?
  13.       Swimwear – we hope to brave it out in a bathing place at the lake!!!!
  14.       Pyjamas – as warm as you have.  If you have some thermal from a ski trip or can borrow some – all the better. Scouts should not sleep in their day clothes.
  15.       Medication – e.g. asthma inhalers.  Please advise leaders of any medication being brought.
  16.       If you have a wetsuit and/or  lifejacket, please being along.  We have a few cub and beaver sized lifejackets but Scouts, Ventures and Rovers should have their own.
  17.  Outfit for fancy dress party – preferably home made

Remember to pack clothes in plastic bags, inside your rucksack so that wet clothes can be put away and won’t ruin the rest of your gear.

Don’t pack for your scout – it really helps on camp when they know what they have and where it’s packed.

                                Camp Rules

  1. Respect for the leaders and other scouts is expected at all times.
  2. Please don’t bring cash – there’s nowhere to spend it.
  3. All mobile phones must be handed to a leader at the start of camp. On request, a scout may use his/her phone to phone home but it must be returned immediately to the Leader.  Any scout found in possession of a mobile phone will have it confiscated and it will not be returned until camp is over.
  4.  No Junk Food, sweets, drinks etc……  NONE……….  Yes, we really mean none!
60 kids + high sugar content + a variety pack of E-numbers just doesn’t work.
